I saw a bit of a programme last night which I’ve not seen
before. Something called Undercover Boss. It was a touching reality show where
the CEO of a construction company worked for a fortnight on one or two building
sites in order to experience how the employees felt about working for the
company, how they were treated, and how they worked.
The CEO found it an eye-opener, and when he got back to his
office he immediately called a Board meeting and initiated some fundamental
changes. He promoted a few people whose potential he felt had been underrated
or overlooked. He put into place some systems that would ensure that employees
no longer felt undervalued. When a large employer in the area closed down and
laid off a substantial-sized work force, he called together his nervous
employees to give them the good news of contracts they had recently been
awarded and to reassure them of at least a few years’ employment as a result.
He lifted the morale and put a new spring in his employees’
steps.
Jesus came to earth as an undercover boss. He was born into
a poor family, and walked alongside the most marginalised and poorest people in
the population. He worked as a carpenter. He had a mother and siblings, friends
... and enemies. He knew how it felt to be treated unfairly, to be mocked, to
be rejected. He knew how it felt to be lonely, to be in pain, to be killed.
And then he transformed the human experience so that the
final word isn’t death, but is everlasting life, because he lived, died and
rose again.
Talk about feeling valued! The king of kings died for me.
And you. Incredible, isn’t it?
It sure lifts my morale, puts a spring in my step and a song
in my heart. Even on a cold, snowy February day.
God is good. Jesus is Lord. Thank God for that!
