Today I had the immense privilege of taking a young mum and
her two school-age children to meet a couple of Syrian refugee families who
have moved nearby. One of the children, James, had cleared out his toy box and
wanted to give toys to one of the toddler boys. To watch the children play
together was a gift – disparate ages, no shared language, but much mimicking,
much joy and laughter and a little quiet watchfulness. Emily said it had been
the best day ever.
It is more blessed to give than to receive.
We stayed awhile. It’s hard to rush away because they also
want to give. So we received tea, and some homemade sweet pastries Saaba had
made this morning. We shared time, enjoyed staccato conversations and came away
feeling blessed. I hope they did, too.
