Smell the Coffee

Smell the Coffee

Dear friends came to visit us after they’d been in Rwanda for a month, so they brought us a bag of coffee. We so enjoyed our time seeing them again, and long after they have gone, I am reminded of them every time I make coffee. It is delicious coffee, with a mild, rich aroma and taste, and its fragrance makes me smile as I remember their cheerful smiles and the time we spent together.

Their presence lingers on in the smell of the coffee. Jesus’ presence lingers on in the words of the Bible. Reading about what he did and what he said fills my mind with the rich fragrance of his loving presence. His words draw me into his warm embrace where I can linger and sense his encouragement and peace.

May you sit back and enjoy the fragrance of Jesus today, either through his words in the Bible or through the lives of others who love him. May his fragrance draw you into his embrace, and overpower the foul, worldly smells rising all around.

The old rugged cross

The old rugged cross. Jesus hung on an ugly tree and suffered the worst execution men could dream up. And yet, through that act of ugliness and brutality emerged beauty and redemption and life everlasting.

What was unspeakably horrible, in the hands of our loving heavenly Father, became a touchstone with the divine, a doorway through which we can enter into that precious, amazing relationship which the Trinity longed for.

This has been a week of shocking terror, a week in which sin broke through in all its despicability. My mind cannot fathom how God will redeem what was lost, but I believe it is exactly what he will do as we cry out to him.

As Tony preached this morning, God loved the world so much he gave his only, beloved son. He wanted to rescue us from the power of darkness, and the light of the world has broken through.

May the fragrance of Jesus remind us of his love and may his light transform our despair and fill us with hope as we trust in him.

When the heat is on ...

When the heat is on, what we have doused ourselves in gives off a fragrance ... or a stink.

I’ve just finished the ironing, and as I pressed the linen jacket I often wear when I fly overseas, the sweet smell of Chanel No 5 wafted up and greeted me. I always indulge at the duty free perfume counter, spraying myself with the samples.

And it occurred to me that the more I wallow in Jesus, the more likely it is for his sweet fragrance to emerge when the pressure is on in life.

Evocative Smells

Smells are so evocative.

This afternoon I was ironing some curtains I just made before hanging them. The smell of the hot iron on the cotton lining took me back fifty years, to a time when my mother, my sister and I made all of our clothes.

It was a time when it didn’t matter who made a garment as long as the garment looked good and suited you. Nobody wanted to wear a shirt with a logo from the manufacturer displayed on the chest. The idea seemed odd and even preposterous. We wanted to wear something unique to us.

The creativity of choosing a dress pattern and matching it with an appropriate fabric and then spending hours cutting and sewing and ironing was satisfying. My sister and I had such fun sharing time together sewing and listening to the latest records on our little transistor radios. Yes, I am that old.

I iron all the time, sheets for the B&B mostly, but the smell of ironing new cotton is different, and takes me back all those years to those happy hours spent perched on my parents’ bed, leaning over an old Singer sewing machine and dreaming of how great this new creation would look when it was finished.

Some may have looked great. Many probably looked not so great. But they were all unique, one of a kind outfits. No danger of arriving at a party or at school in the same dress as someone else.

The smell of the iron on cotton is so distinctive, and that reminds me of the distinctive aroma we as Christians have in the world. Paul writes that we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ. The pleasing aroma of Christ.

It doesn’t say that when we do good things or live perfect lives we are the pleasing aroma of Christ. Just by believing in Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, we are the pleasing aroma of Christ. We are not perfect, but he is, and I am sure that the aroma is way better even than Chanel or Dioror Estee Lauder. It is perfect, like He is.

May you spread the fragrance of Christ wherever you go today, confident that the beautiful smell is unique to Jesus and doesn’t depend on your goodness, but his.

A Fading Rose bursting with Sweet Perfume

In the tall glass vase in front of me stands a statuesque rose, a Buxom Beauty. A vibrant pink in its heyday, the colour is now fading into a more antique version of pink, and the outlying petals are beginning to brown and dry out.

Still, the magnificent rose has a beauty about it, different from last week, but still arresting in its appearance and fragrance.

In fact, the fragrance seems to have intensified as the visual appearance of the rose has begun to fade.

How true to life this metaphor in front of me is! We are friends with many octogenarians and even nonagenarians, all of whom have the fragrance of a gentle and quiet spirit, and the wisdom of years.

Life is fleeting. Life is good. Celebrate life today, whether you are a newly flowering or a fading rose.

Let the fragrance of Jesus fill the atmosphere where you live and move and have your being. Let the fruits of the Spirit ripen and sweeten in the experience of those who know and love you.

Live life to the full. That’s what Jesus came to give us. Embrace the moment.

More distractions

I stood watching Dusty scout a parking lot down the road. She would head off in one direction, then her head would suddenly snap around and she’d make a 90 degree turn and follow an intriguing smell in another. She bounced from smell to smell until she tired of it all and continued along the road.

Soon a former neighbour drove up and paused to chat. He had much to moan about – poor health, inefficient staff in his neighbourhood grocery store. He concluded that ‘nobody gives two hoots these days’ and I found myself nodding in agreement.

But I don’t agree! I realized after he’d driven off that I was just like Dusty. I have determined to soak in Scripture so that my thoughts align with those of God, so that I have the mind of Christ, and then, wham, I veer off in a very cynical and worldly assessment of things in order to be agreeable to my neighbour.

How can I be the sweet fragrance of Jesus to those I meet if I’m ready to concur when the moaning begins? Jesus is always positive, always encouraging, always loving. I need help here.

I don’t want to be like Dusty, heading off in the direction that Jesus is leading, only to snap back and join in the moaning or the gossiping.

I need to take to heart something I read in Hosea this morning. Always depend on the Lord.
