Annual Turkey Trot

It’s been a weekend of smiles and laughter.

OK, there was a wee bit of work involved as well, but no complaints when celebrating joyful occasions. And I had so much help. From our two sons here, daughter-in-law and fiancée. Don.

We had a few folks round to celebrate our eldest son’s engagement. We are so pleased for them both and rejoicing to have a new member of the clan. She’s a wee treasure.

I say a few folks, but that doesn’t really convey the depth of relationship. Wonderful friends and neighbours. Fabulous family. People we care about and who care about us. Smiles all round.

Then for the first time in about six years, we celebrated American Thanksgiving. OK, it is about ten days early, but I’ll be enjoying it again in ten days time a few thousand miles from here, and for that reason I wanted to celebrate it first with the ones I love here in Scotland. So we had family and a couple of friends over – 17 in all.

Laughter. Noise. Occasional tears from a couple of wee ones. Chaos. Birthday cake. Pumpkin pie. Champagne. Joy.

And the Thanksgiving Tree – a bare branch, on which guests are invited to write on a paper leaf those things for which they are particularly thankful for at the moment. They hang the leaves on the tree. It is funny and poignant to read the various subjects for which we’ve been thankful over the years.

Today we are tired. The turkey is skeletal. The crystal is carefully dried and put away for the next celebration.  The dog and cats are sleeping with smiles on their faces – turkey scraps and the sausages that hit the floor now in their tums. I suppose at some level they may be giving thanks too!

We are so blessed. We are so grateful. God is so good.
