Hard as Ice

The landscape is frosted white. -10C this morning.

So glad to have a home. So thankful not to be out there shivering.

I don’t imagine it was quite this cold in Bethlehem on that night 2,000 years ago. But I’m just back from California and I know that even in a temperate climate, nights can be very cold.

I guess Mary’s uppermost thought may not have been how cold it was. But still...

Not pleasant. And for how many women today, giving birth is still fraught with uncertainties and complications. I heard on the radio yesterday about the dire situation in China, where rural women who have migrated to the cities are denied health care and are turned away from hospitals even when they are about to deliver.

How many other women can’t even get to hospitals. Those in Palestine, having to cross through endless checkpoints and barricades.

God be with them all, and may Jesus return soon to restore justice to this hurting world.
